In December 2014 and January 2015 the Zapatistas and the Indigenous
National Congress hosted the “First Global Festival of Resistances and
Rebellions against Capitalism.” The Festival’s main objective was for social
movements to share stories about their political work and struggle with other
social movements and like-minded people.
In 2105, Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú teamed up with
Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto for a get-out-the-vote campaign, in spite
of compelling allegations that the Mexican federal government was responsible
for the widespread kidnapping, forced disappearance, and murder of hundreds of
innocent individuals in rural areas. Many communities boycotted elections since
all parties on the ballot have ties to this violence. At an event, a young
woman named Ana Gatica publicly criticized Menchú for supporting the federal
government and encouraging Mexicans to vote.
